ESP delivers a fantastic metal workhorse in the realm of 7-string electric guitars with the E-II Horizon FR-7, which combines a premium feel with massive power. After only a few minutes of play, it’s clear that it was designed with the performer in mind. Is it able to withstand a closer examination? Let’s check it out.

The sound is excellent, thanks in large part to the two EMG active pickups, which are among the most powerful active pickups available. No matter how much distortion or speed you put at them, they provide a base for some deafeningly loud, extremely heavy tones that stay articulate and surprisingly warm. The tapping and pinch harmonics are a delight to hear, and they’re great for rhythmic chugging and scorching solos.

Horizon FR-7 7-String Electric Guitar by E-II with Floyd Rose Black pickups. The ESP E-II FRX features an alder body with a flamed maple top, a neck-through maple neck with a 25.5″ scale, and 24 extra-jumbo frets on an ebony fingerboard with a thin U neck, and a 25.5″ scale with 24 extra-jumbo frets on an ebony fingerboard. All of your shreddy tone is pushed down the signal channel by a pair of Seymour Duncan SH-14 (B) & SH2 (N) pickups. Gotoh tuners keep everything cinched down and in tune through hard crunches and string-stretching leads, while a Floyd Rose Original tremolo bridge allows for all the seven-string dive bombs and squeals your mind can imagine. A Guitar case is included.

The E-II Horizon FR-7 from ESP may not be as flamboyant in design as some other 7-string guitars, but it surely provides a style you’d be pleased to flaunt on stage. That’s fantastic since the stage is where this instrument belongs. It’s made to last, is dependable, plays smoothly, and sounds fantastic no matter what you throw at it. We didn’t expect much less for the price.
